Our class looked at how a short film can be used for marketing. I found this great one from Prada called A Therapy, directed by Roman Polanski. It was debuted as a short film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. Because it was created for Prada, it features clothing exclusively made for the film.
Clocking in at 3:30, A Therapy tells the charming story of a therapist and his patient, played by Ben Kingsley and Helena Bonham Carter. The film is truly a film – it is shot beautifully, and the acting is top notch. In fact, Kingsley’s therapist doesn’t say a word, and he doesn’t have to. His expressions tell the story.

Prada lets Polanski tell a story with true artistry. While Bonham Carter is draped head-to-toe in Prada, she looks classic and beautiful. The clothing and accessories are a part of the artistry. It beautifully features Prada while telling a very amusing story. It is effective in its marketing, and positions Prada as a high-end product (or should I say, continues to position).
This film is clearly made for Prada, but even if you didn’t know it was a Prada film, it is still enjoyable and entertaining. I don’t feel like this is selling a product as much as taking an amusing look at a lifestyle.
